Here we go.

Christmas Day has always depressed me. This is surprising, because I look forward to Christmas Day like few other days of the year. It’s the day I spend feasting with my whole family. It’s the day I finally open my presents. It’s the culmination of weeks of merriment and joy. It should be the high point of the Christmas season. Yet, it depresses me. I get depressed because the anticipation is gone. I have learned that I enjoy the build-up to Christmas more than Christmas itself.

And it is because of this love of anticipation that I’ve grown to appreciate spring more and more. Summer is my favorite time because of all of the wonder and abandon that it holds. But once I get to summer, I find that the time goes much more quickly than I had expected. Soon enough, the leaves are gone and winter is on its way. With spring, the summer is still in the near future, close enough of to see, but just far enough away that I can’t touch it. Each spring day seems to give something new, a different element to a perfect summer day; the first cleansing rain, the first drive with the windows down, springing the clocks forward...

Today was Oberon Day. It was the first time we drank Bell’s Oberon, the ultimate summer beer. It felt right.

Jess and I met at the Harris Grill for our first pints. We each had four. Even though the temperature didn’t climb much above 40, it felt like summer. Days of disc golf and boat rides, and evenings of patio conversations and relaxed chatter seemed near. We talked about how in the hell we can even begin to dream of drinking 1,000 Oberons over the next few months (roughly 2.7 beers per person, per day).

Even with such a daunting task in front of us, I could only think about how much fun it will be. I started to imagine all of the fun summer activities, like the 7th annual Smack Down belly smack competition, or beach trips, or baseball games, or sitting on a back porch quietly overlooking beautiful downtown Pittsburgh. I started to think about how Oberon will fit in with each of those pleasures. I became giddy with anticipation.

It’s going to be a fun spring, and an even better summer.

Oberon Day.

And so it begins. Bell's Brewery released their 2011 batch of Oberon Ale at 12:01 a.m. this morning.

For more information about Bell's Oberon, check out the brewery's website. They do some awesome stuff.

For more information about us, and what we're doing here, check back tomorrow. We're off to a slow start.

For now, go have a beer. We're going to do the same.
